Carlos Gonzalez, Ramon Hernandez and Jhoulys Chacin rejoined the Colorado Rockies for spring training after a disappointing elimination from the first round of the World Baseball Classic.
After losses to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, 9-3 and 6-3, to begin the tournament, the Venezuelans’ offense woke up and beat Spain 11-6. However, with just three games in the opening round, it was a little too late for Venezuela.
Chacin pitched in Friday’s loss to the Dominican Republic.
Even after Venezuela was eliminated, pride was still on the line in Sunday’s game versus Spain.
“We are professionals, and every time we have a uniform on, we’re going to go out to try to win,” said Gonzalez.
By winning Sunday, Venezuela avoided having to win a qualifier to be a part of the 2017 WBC.
