Three pellets from a shotgun blast was all it took to alter Juan Sandoval‘s vision forever. The incident was the result of a restaurant dispute in 2006. Now, Sandoval is trying out for a spot on the Rays’ 25-man roster, although at this point making the opening day roster is unlikely.
Sandoval has been roaming around in the Mexican League since 2011, after stints with the Mariners, Phillies and Brewers. Rays officials, however, have been hinting that there could be a spot at Class AAA for Sandoval after spring training. At this point, a spot on the Class AAA roster would mean the world to Sandoval after all he has been through.
Sandoval uses former pitcher Jim Abbott as a model of hope. Abbott pitched with only one hand and was fairly successful, playing for six teams in 10 years in the MLB. As of now, Sandoval is pitching in spring training and hoping that modern medicine will soon help him repair his eye.
