The Nationals did very well last season. In October of 2012 they clinched the National League East division. They also have the best record in Major League Baseball at 98-64.The National’s prepared to defend their NL East title as they began the off-season.
During the off-season, the Nationals finalized their contracts and looked over their eligible players for the upcoming season. As the team begins again we see some of the team’s best players. They include first baseman Adam LaRoche . He had 76 runs scored, 25 home runs and 100 runs batted in (RBI’s). He also had a .271 batting average with a .343 on base percentage and a slugging percentage of .510.
Bryce Harper (CF) had 98 runs scored, 22 home runs and 59 runs batted in. He had a .270 batting average, an on- base percentage of .340 and a slugging average of .477. Lastly, pitcher Stephen Strasburg had a record of 15 wins 6 losses in 159.1 innings pitched with an earned run average of 3.16. Strasburg had 197 strikeouts and gave up only 62 runs.
Although there are several good players, there are some worries for the team in the upcoming season. The fact that the Nationals don’t have a reliable lefty in the bullpen is seen as a problem area. We also have to make sure that the players injured do not get injured again and cause problems in the upcoming season.
Three players who were injured and being watched closely are Danny Espinosa who tore his rotator cuff in his left shoulder and has been in rehab. He is now expected to start season on time. Wilson Ramos, torn meniscus, ACL in right knee. He recently caught first bullpen session. Lastly, Ryan Zimmerman has been recovering from his October 2012 right shoulder surgery. He now has a clean bill to play.
We will also see a new face this season. Rafael Soriano joins a stacked bullpen for the Washington Nationals in 2013 after excelling for the New York Yankees in 2012.
We have to make sure to keep an eye on Anthony Rendon, Brian Goodwin, Lucas Giolito, A.J. Cole and Michael Taylor for the upcoming season.
